Takeaways from Week 4 of prep football season

Believe it or not, the high school football regular season is nearly halfway done.

There are several teams that are beginning to emerge as serious contenders, while others are still fighting through some early season trials.

Whatever the case may be, these first few weeks have been very entertaining for fans in The Sporting Times coverage area.

While there have been several good games played on the gridiron so far this season, Friday was a night teeming with entertaining games and significant wins for programs across the area. Here’s a quick look back at a few of these games.

Logan County at Russellville

Last season Logan County went 1-9, and the Cougars lost to rival Russellville by a score of 54-14.

My, how much things can change in one season.

The Cougars defeated the Panthers for the first time since 2011 with a 28-21 victory on Friday night, and Logan County is off to one of its best starts in school history.

The Cougars are currently atop the Class 4A standings with a perfect 4-0 record, and Coach Todd Adler’s inaugural season could not be going any better.

Glasgow at Allen County-Scottsville

Friday night’s game between the Scotties and Patriots was a game that you hated that there had to be a loser.

Glasgow and ACS battled it out until the very end, but ultimately it was Coach Brad Hood and the Patriots who came out on top with a 39-35 victory.

More significantly the Patriots are currently 4-0 on the year—the best mark since 2010 when ACS made it all the way to the state championship.

Behind the rocket arm of senior quarterback Chase Wilson, Allen County-Scottsville is looking for another deep postseason run in 2017.

Greenwood at Franklin-Simpson

Franklin-Simpson sleepwalked through a 36-7 loss to South Warren, but the Wildcats bounced back with style, clawing the Greenwood Gators by a score of 60-6 on Friday night.

It was certainly just what the doctor ordered for Franklin-Simpson, the Wildcats hushing the whispers of doubt with an overall dominant performance.

Meanwhile Greenwood will look to be on the rebound at home against Barren County on Friday, the Gators trying to snap their three-game skid.

South Warren at Central Hardin

South Warren continued their excellent season with a 27-17 victory over Central Hardin on Friday night, and the Spartans are still yet to trail this season.

Newcomer quarterback Gavin Spurrier has been the catalyst for the South Warren offense so far this season, and the defense has been solid behind junior defensive lineman Jacob Lacey.

Warren East at Edmonson County

Don’t look now, but here come the Raiders.

Coming off a 3-8 season last year, Warren East has already matched its win total from last season. The Raiders are off to a 3-1 start, and wide receiver Caleb Husky is currently leading the state of Kentucky in receiving yards.

The most impressive thing about Friday’s win, however, is how the Raiders limited the explosive Edmonson County offense. The Wildcats came into the game having scored 144 points so far on the season, but the Raiders held Edmonson County to just 10 points Friday night.

Warren East will look to improve to 4-1 when then they host Glasgow on Friday, while Edmonson County will look to rebound at Metcalfe County.
