Week 5 area football previews

With the first four weeks of the 2018 Kentucky high school football season in the books, there are four area teams still sporting unscathed records.

Entering Week 5, Bowling Green, Glasgow, Logan County and South Warren are all 4-0 – and each of those clubs has a pretty good chance of remaining perfect following Friday’s round of games.

With 10 local games of the slate, let’s take a look at each matchup:

Warren East (2-2) at Glasgow (4-0)

Breakdown: Glasgow has won the past three meetings against Warren East … The Scotties – ranked No. 4 in Class 2A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – are off to their first 4-0 start since 2016 after defeating Allen County-Scottsville 28-7 last Friday … Nick Mitchell ran for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the Scotties’ win … Thomas Mazey rushed for 250 yards and three TDs in Warren East’s 42-14 win over Edmonson County last week.

Bowling Green (4-0) at Warren Central (0-4)

Breakdown: Bowling Green leads the all-time series 38-12 over Warren Central and has won the past nine meetings … The Purples and Dragons have met every season since 1974 … Bowling Green – ranked No. 2 in Class 5A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – won 21-12 at Owensboro last week in a game that DeVito Tisdale rushed for 135 yards and two TDs … Warren Central dropped a 36-6 decision to John Hardin last week … The Dragons have lost 28 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

Greenwood (1-3) at Barren County (1-3)

Breakdown: Greenwood leads the series 12-3 dating back to 1999 and has won the last three meetings over Barren County … The Gators lost 50-7 at home to Franklin-Simpson last week … The Trojans are coming off a 21-20 win over Monroe County, which was the program’s first in its new stadium … QB Zach Johnson passed for 161 yards and three TDs in the victory.

South Warren (4-0) at Grayson County (4-0)

Breakdown: South Warren won 49-0 last season in the first-ever meeting between the two sides … The Spartans and Grayson County are both 4-0 in 2018 … South Warren – ranked No. 3 in Class 5A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – defeated Central Hardin 59-0 last week … QB Gavin Spurrier threw for 211 yards and three TDs in the win, while Cameron Harrison rushed for 148 yards and two scores … The Cougars won 41-12 at Ohio County last week.

Franklin-Simpson (3-1) at Meade County (2-2)

Breakdown: Meade County defeated Franklin-Simpson 24-21 last season in the first meeting between the two sides since 1998 … Franklin-Simpson – ranked No. 2 in Class 4A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – ran for 455 yards last week in a 50-7 win at Greenwood … RBs Tre Bass (198, 2) and Carlos McKinney (165, 3) combined for 363 yards and five TDs in the victory … Meade County beat Breckinridge County 36-6 last week as both Deshawn Welch and Kobe Nikolao each finished with two TDs.

Allen County-Scottsville (3-1) at Pulaski County (2-2)

Breakdown: Pulaski County won 36-20 last season in the first-ever meeting between the two sides … Allen County-Scottsville – ranked No. 10 in Class 4A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – suffered its first loss of the year in a 28-7 defeat at Glasgow last week … Pulaski County won 30-14 at Danville last Friday … QB Wiley Cain passed for 331 yards and two TDs, while RB Tristan Cox ran for 72 yards and two scores.

Logan County (4-0) at McLean County (3-1)

Breakdown: Logan County – ranked No. 4 in Class 4A in the latest Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll – is off to its second consecutive 4-0 start … The Cougars defeated Russellville 49-7 last week … RB Gary Hardy rushed for 130 yards and three TDs, while QB Tyler Ezell finished with three TDs of his own … McLean County won 31-7 at Muhlenberg County last week … RB Peyton Caraway ran for 142 yards and a TD for the Cougars.

Russellville (2-2) vs. Trigg County (2-2)

Breakdown: Russellville has won the past six meetings against Trigg County … The Panthers are coming off a 49-7 loss at crosstown rival Logan County … QB Jacob Naylor passed for 98 yards and a TD in the Panthers’ loss … Trigg County defeated Ballard Memorial 49-13 last week.

Metcalfe County (1-3) at Edmonson County (2-2)

Last meeting: Metcalfe County won 14-13 in overtime on Sept. 15, 2017

Breakdown: Metcalfe County has won the past two meetings against Edmonson County … The Wildcats fell 42-14 at Warren East last week for a second consecutive loss … The Hornets earned their first win of the season with an 8-7 victory over Adair County last week … Metcalfe County QB Gabe Zurmehly finished with 170 all-purpose yards.

Monroe County (1-3) at Campbellsville (3-1)

Last meeting: Monroe County won 27-0 on Sept. 15, 2017

Breakdown: Monroe County won last season’s meeting 27-0 against Campbellsville … The Falcons lost 21-20 at Barren County last week … The Eagles defeated Green County 41-6 last week for a second straight win … Campbellsville RB Malachi Corley ran for 122 yards and two TDs, while QB Arren Hash finished with 83 yards and a pair of scores.
