Week 5 Power Rankings for 4th Region Boys Basketball

         Outlook: Bowling Green showed no rust in its return from a 2.5 week break due to COVID-19 cancellations. The Purples faced off against two of the state’s top teams, dominating Somerset on the road (87-55) and Ashland Blazer at home (83-57). Junior Turner Buttry paced BG on the weekend, averaging 23.5 points per game on an efficient 12-of-17 shooting overall. Senior Isaiah Mason was consistent as always, averaging 16.5 points and nine rebounds over the course of the two games. Jaxon Flanary had a big weekend as well, scoring 13 points in Friday’s game before scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds in Saturday’s win. Coach Sherrill’s club will take on a couple of western Kentucky teams on Monday and Tuesday (@ University Heights, vs. Christian County) before hosting Warren Central in a big district game this Friday

2. Warren Central                      4-1                               2

         Outlook: Warren Central only played once last week, defeating district rival South Warren at home, 52-42. The Dragons needed a big second half run to finish off the Spartans – Central led 32-31 at the start of the fourth quarter. WC continues to be very balanced on offense as four players scored in double figures on Friday night. Led by Omari Glover’s 12 points, Chappelle Whitney, Jace Carver, and Izayiah Villafuerte all scored 11 points in the victory. Whitney also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the way. Coach Unseld’s squad has two games on its schedule for the upcoming week – road trips to Bowling Green and Barren County.

3. Clinton County                       11-1                             3

         Outlook: Clinton County continued its winning ways as it won three games in Week 4. The most important victory of the week was a 73-57 win over district foe Metcalfe County. Four players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs were led by Nick Brown’s 21 points and 11 rebounds. Chase Stines scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as well. The Bulldogs will jump back into region play, hosting district rival Cumberland County on Tuesday night before traveling to Monroe County for a Friday night game with the Falcons.

4. Franklin-Simpson                   3-1                               4      

         Outlook: Franklin-Simpson has only played once since January 15, having three games canceled last week. Tuesday’s home matchup with Butler County has already been canceled. If all goes according to plan, Coach Spencer’s club will host district rival Logan County on Friday night before inviting Cumberland County to Franklin for a Saturday night affair.

5. Allen County-Scottsville        7-2                               6      

         Outlook: Allen County-Scottsville picked up two more wins in Week 4, beating Monroe County and Hancock County at home. Its three-game win streak, coupled with a valuable road win over Clinton County, propelled the Patriots to #5 in the latest ST Power Rankings. ACS heads back into district play this week with a Tuesday home game with Glasgow (ACS won 68-59 earlier in the season) and a road game at Barren County (ACS won 52-46 earlier this season). Coach Bonds and company also travel to Cloverport for a Saturday afternoon matchup.

6. Greenwood                              5-4                               5      

         Outlook: Greenwood will have had four straight games canceled assuming its able to hit the hardwood on Wednesday night for a home game with Fern Creek. Coach McCoy’s Gators hope to then host South Warren on Friday night, as well as Murray on Saturday evening. We will see how the 11–12-day layoff affects Greenwood.

7. Barren County                        8-3                               7      

         Outlook: Barren County won both of its games this week to improve to 8-3 on the season. A furious comeback in the final minutes helped the Trojans send the game to overtime (where they won) against Central Hardin. Coach Cunningham’s club then got a big district road victory over Glasgow on Friday night. In Tuesday’s win over the Bruins, four players scored in double figures – led by Gavin Withrow’s 15 points. On Friday night it was Ryan Shirley’s turn to shine as the junior scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Trojans will have two major opportunities in Week 5 to make a statement as they host #5 Allen County-Scottsville on Friday and #2 Warren Central on Saturday.

8. South Warren                         4-3                               8

         Outlook: South Warren nearly won its fourth-straight game but dropped a heartbreaker to Apollo on Monday night. It followed up that loss with a strong performance in defeat at Warren Central. The Spartans played neck-and-neck with the Dragons for more than three quarters before falling by ten points. Coach Holland’s club came out the next night and got a big road victory at Daviess County. Will Faulkner led the Spartans over the Panthers, hitting four three-pointers to score 14 points. Luke Burton added 13 points and Caden Veltkamp scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the victory. If all goes to plan, South will host Logan County for a Monday night contest before traveling to Greenwood on Friday night looking to avenge a 33-point home loss earlier in the season.

9. Metcalfe County                     8-3                               9

         Outlook: Metcalfe County sandwiched two wins over Cumberland County and Casey County with a loss at Clinton County. Peyton Dial lit up the Panthers on Tuesday night for 31 points, including a 6-for-10 mark from behind the arc. Boston Devore led the way on Friday night in the win over Casey County, as the senior scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Three games await the Hornets in Week 5: road trips to Russell County (Tuesday) and Glasgow (Thursday), as well as a home game with Monroe County on Saturday.

10. Russellville                                  5-3                               10

         Outlook: Coach Quarles’ club picked up two more wins in Week 4 as the Panthers won at Dawson Springs before earning a district overtime win over Logan County. Jaquis Todd averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds in the two victories, scoring 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the overtime thriller over the Cougars. Russellville will host East Robertson out of Tennessee on Tuesday before traveling to Todd County Central for another district meeting with the Rebels.
