The Week in Football – Week 10
With one more week left after this one, football teams all over the land are trying to tune up, maintain momentum and stay healthy all not necessarily in that order as the playoffs loom large.
One of those teams was Elizabethtown, who welcomed Bardstown in a District matchup and a chance for some payback after a loss to these same Tigers last year. Unfortunately for Bardstown head coach David Clark, these were not those same Tigers from a year ago as massive graduations have decimated both sides of the ball from a 10-2 team and an injury to one of their most productive runners has further crippled them. The Panthers and coach Mark Brown showed little mercy as they scored often and early putting up 35-points in the first quarter and ending the half with 42 in an eventual 48-0 win. Senior multi-talented back Jay Becherer was a human highlight reel as he scored twice on punt returns for 50 and 77 yards and then added on a 16-yard run to boot. The Panthers limited the Tigers to just 9-yards rushing and 34-total yards offense. Elizabethtown also totaled only 167-yards in their rout, but it was the Panther special teams that really shined. Besides Becherer’s bit of magic, Derek Smith returned the opening kickoff for 79-yards and a touchdown and Elizabethtown does seem to be peaking at the right time.
Meanwhile, both Central Hardin and North Hardin were engaged in an old fashion slugfest as the two rivals were fighting for an undefeated District record and the game did not disappoint. After the Trojans overcame several Bruin scoring threats during the first half, were able to take advantage of one of their many scoring drives with a 1-yard run by quarterback Eric Moore. After that, the Bruins reasserted themselves and using a punishing running game scored 17 of the last 20-points to win 17-10. The highlight play was a 73-yard scoring run by runningback Deonco Wilkerson that broke a 10-all game. The Bruins couldn’t celebrate their fourth straight Class 6-A District 2 Championship win until Moore’s fourth down pass at the Bruin 14-yardline fell incomplete in the end zone to finalize the win.
LaRue County celebrated a 32-7 win over Edmonson County and wrapped up the No.2 seed in the upcoming playoffs in the Class 3-A District 2 playoff game. The Hawks pounded out 208-yards rushing scoring in every quarter and getting balanced scoring from Quarterback Dane Milby (3-yard run in the first quarter), Anthony Adkins (17-yard catch from Milby in the second quarter), Shane King (26-yard catch from Milby in the second quarter), Bryson Cobb (6-yards run in the third quarter) and Russell Young (15-yard run in the fourth quarter). The Hawk defense held Edmonson County in check and are tuning up for the playoffs.
Game of the Week: Central Hardin @ Louisville Ballard – Last season, Ballard was a team which would sling it around the football field and had the distinction of knocking off both Meade County and Central Hardin in the playoffs before being eliminated by Trinity (Louisville). Although 1,000 yard receiver Jordan Gunter is no longer there, but quarterback Terrance May is still there and the Bruins still LOVE to throw it. On the other hand, Central Hardin will run the ball, eat up the clock and try to keep the ball away from May. Should be a great game between a battle of the BRUINS1
