The WEEK in FOOTBALL – Week 11
With the playoff situation settled (who’s in and who do they play), then it was a week of staying tuned up and trying to avoid injury while the Commonwealth was enveloped in a gentle (in some areas) rain.
One of those places was Fort Knox and what better place than where the Gold Vault is located than watch the Eagles protect their home field in a 74-0 rout of visiting Shawnee. In a game which was systematically over by halftime, Fort Knox used a powerful ground attack led by senior back Kaylon Luster (who gained 160-yards rushing on just four carries) and built a 22-0 lead after one quarter and then a 46-0 halftime lead and had the game effectively on a running clock the rest of the way. While Fort Knox was piling up 487-yards (all on the ground) total offense, the Golden Eagles ended the game with -20-yards.
Meanwhile, Central Hardin gained a little bit of revenge against Ballard getting a first quarter touchdown run by Josh Volentine and then head coach Tim Mattingly let his defense do the rest getting three turnovers and making Bruin quarterback Terrence Mays throw early and late into the rain as he completed just four passes (two were to his own receivers) and one of his misdirected throws ended up in DeOnta Duncan’s hands who returned it 25-yards for a touchdown. Duncan also added a 7-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to finish off a 21-0 win.
The rain also played a part in the Doss @ North Hardin game as Trojan quarterback Eric Moore completed only 12 of 28 for 180-yards and despite the wet football (both teams dropped the ball totaled 16-times each losing it a couple), but unfortunately the Trojans the last fumble recovery didn’t lead to any last second magic as the muddy field and unsure footing forced a fourth down failure in a 14-9 loss.
Elizabethtown overcame a sloppy first half and was able to get two third quarter touchdowns on specialty teams to complete a 20-12 come from behind win over Glasgow. Derek Smith returned the second half kickoff for a 74 -yard touchdown and Jay Becherer fielded a punt and weaved his way into the end zone for a 36-yard score. The Panthers gained 238-yards on offense, but were still able to find a way to win.
Game of the Week – Ohio County (7-3) @ Central Hardin (7-3) : Should be a great matchup between two teams with different styles. Heath Simmons has over 2,000 yards passing and 31-touchdowns and the Eagles LOVE to throw the ball. Central Hardin loves to run and control the clock. Could be a wild game depending on which team has a distinct advantage.
