The Week in Football – Week 4
It seemed like old times as Bardstown and cross town rival Nelson County squared off in their annual battle and just like the last six meetings the Tigers were victorious. Although the final 47-27 score looked pretty much like a runaway, it was actually closer than the score indicated. It took a couple of turnovers and two touchdowns by Tiger runningback Jeremiah Odom to turn a six-point game into a 20-point difference. The last time Nelson County beat Bardstown was 2010, but the Cardinals 14th straight loss still stung Cardinal head coach Kenneth Thornsberry just the same.
Meanwhile, LaRue County was able to stay unbeaten and push their record to 4-0 over a stubborn Taylor County team, but it wasn’t easy. It took a fourth down stop by Shane King to seal the victory in a 21-19 Hawk win. King also came down with a 16-yard scoring catch in the first quarter to give the Hawks their first touchdown of the game and the running of Bryson Cobb (183-yards and two scores was the difference. The Cardinals inability to get the all important extra point played a huge part in the two point loss. It’s LaRue County’s best start since 2002 and it has coach Josh Jagger beaming.
While the Hawks were able to stay unbeaten, Elizabethtown fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when they traveled to Christian Academy of Louisville to battle the Centurions and discovered what Central Hardin found out on a muddy field which is why they were the State 2-A Champions. The offensive and defensive lines of head coach Stefon Lefors team were pretty good, but it didn’t look like it would matter early when the Panthers took a 9-0 lead after a quarter on a bad snap over center for a safety and a Kass Disney scoring catch by Tyler Durbin. After that it was all CAL as they only allowed two Panther first downs in the second half and outgained them in total yardage 293-132. Also, several Panthers were banged up including Jay Becherer who was hobbled by a sprained ankle.
Grayson County found the going rough against Ohio County and were thoroughly beaten, 60-7. It hasn’t been an easy several weeks for the Cougars and head coach Ed Smart, who’s team has been hit with a rash of injuries to key players and suffered another to quarterback No.4 and found himself down to his team’s fifth string signal caller. Also, the Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in the area with games left with Greenwood and Bowling Green coming up.
Like Grayson County, the Central Hardin Bruins have one of the toughest schedules and right after a mudwrestling match with CAL, the Bruins faced powerful South Warren, but every time the Bruins seemed to get close, the Spartans answered in a 27-17 South Warren win. The difference was quarterback Gavin Spurrier, who threw for three touchdowns and 220-yards.
GAME OF THE WEEK : Central Hardin @ John Hardin : At one time, the Bulldogs dominated this series during the Mark Brown era, but since then Central Hardin seems to have gained the upper hand until last season’s Bulldog win. This time around the Bruins are reeling after two straight losses and the Bulldogs are 2-2 after starting 0-2. Key matchup will be the Bulldog running game against the Bruin rush defense. Last week, Steven Livers had 117-yards running and scored three times. One was on a 68-yard catch against Warren Central.
