The Wildcats Pull Out A Big Homecoming Win 23-14 Over Metcalfe

It’s not just Football Friday night in Brownsville tonight, it’s also Homecoming for Edmonson County High School. The tailgaters are in full force tonight in support for their Wildcats.

The Wildcats are looking for a much needed win tonight against a very good Metcalfe County Hornets team. The Wildcats are coming off back to back near miss games in which they had opportunities to win, but just couldn’t put it all together to pull out the victories. Realistically, the Wildcats could just as easily have been 3-1, but find themselves at 1-3 in need of a solid win.IMG_0531 (441x640)

The first quarter saw the Wildcats and the Hornets come out and trade jabs. The size difference on the offensive and defensive lines was evident early on. The Hornets held a huge size advantage on the Wildcats on both sides of the ball, and hoped that this would play to their advantage. Early on, it did just that. The Wildcats had trouble moving the ball in the first.

The Hornets got on the board first with 8:51 left to go in the 2nd quarter. Running back Tyler McMurtrey took the handoff 45 yards for a Hornet touchdown. The extra point was no good.
On the Wildcats next possession, the Wildcats did a good job of using different offensive formations to keep the Hornets on their heels. After having the ball just over one minute, the Wildcats get on the board with a 14 yard pass from Jake Dial to Dakota Carner. The extra point was good. At the half, the Wildcats lead 7-6.
After back and forth stops by both teams, the Hornets were trying to pull momentum back to their sidelines, but an ill advised pass, and a great interception by Wildcat defensive back Drew Decker turned in to a pick 6 from 24 yards out.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Hornets fumbled the return, and the ball was recovered by Wildcat lineman, Jacob Peger, at the 24 yard line. After three quarters of play, the Wildcats lead 13-6.
The first play of the fourth quarter saw Wildcat quarterback Jake Dial score on the quarterback keeper. The extra point was good. The Wildcats lead 20-6 with 11:57 left in the game

After a long drive, the Hornets made things interesting. After a long drive that went 85 yards, Tyler Scroggy connected on a 7 yard pass to the back of the endzone. The extra point was good. The Hornets now trail just 20-14.
Ahead just one score, the Wildcats take possession of the football with 2:50 left to go in the game. The Wildcats John Finch with a first down run of 16 yards. The Hornets make 3 straight stops on defense and use their time outs to conserve the clock. On fourth down, freshman kicker Brett Brannon steps on the field and nails a big 34 yard field goal to put the Wildcats up two scores, 23-14, with 1:15 left to go in the game.

The Wildcats hold on for the 23-14 win as time ran out.

Edmonson County will host South Warren next Friday. Gametime is 7:00 p.m.
Writer’s note: Congratulations to Homecoming Queen Julie Sullivan, a Senior Lady Cat Volleyball player.
