Will McCoy named boys’ basketball coach at Greenwood

Will McCoy, a bright, young coach with many years of experience, has been named the next head boys’ basketball coach at Greenwood High School, the school officially announced in a press conference Tuesday in the GHS auditorium.

McCoy — a 2008 graduate of Glasgow High School — takes over the Gators’ program after spending the past few seasons as an assistant coach under Warren Cunningham at Barren County.

“I had a really good place at Barren County,” McCoy said. “Coach Cunningham and those guys do things the right way. I’ve learned a ton from them – very grateful for those experiences and relationships built there.

“I was very upfront when they brought me on board there that a goal of mine was to be a head coach – preferably in the Fourth Region – if the right opportunity presented itself and the right fit was there. I feel like this is exactly that and I’m tickled to death and excited to get going with Greenwood basketball.”

McCoy replaces Bob Pels, who stepped down at the beginning of May after going 51-41 in three seasons at the helm. Greenwood finished 16-12 overall last season and fell to Warren Central in the District 14 Tournament semifinals.

“I think coach Pels and those guys were right there. Good seasons, very good regular-season records – just couldn’t quite get over that postseason hump,” McCoy said. “So, from Day 1, that is gonna be the goal and that’s gonna be the expectations that are set and nothing less than that. We’re gonna battle every day.”
