District 14 Baseball Tournament | Bracket, Preview, Predictions, Information

The 2018 high school baseball regular season has concluded but the action on the diamond is just now heating up, as the District 14 Baseball Tournament is set to take place from Monday to Wednesday at South Warren Ballpark.

As all five area teams enter with hopes of taking home the trophy, only one club will be able to say they’re district champions.

Here’s a rundown of the tournament, which will make for three exciting days of postseason baseball action:

District 14 Baseball Tournament Seeding:

  1. South Warren
  2. Bowling Green
  3. Warren East
  4. Greenwood
  5. Warren Central

District 14 Baseball Tournament Schedule:

  • Monday, May 21 – No. 4 Greenwood (19-13, 5-7) vs. No. 5 Warren Central (9-16, 0-12) – 6 p.m.

Greenwood is playing solid baseball at the right time.

After being swept by South Warren in their final regular-season district series, the Gators have regrouped and enter the postseason having won two of their last three games — including a shutout win over defending Region 4 champion Franklin-Simpson last Thursday.

Greenwood swept the regular-season series against Warren Central, winning those three contests 15-3, 9-4 and 15-4, respectively. Although the Gators enter Monday’s tournament opener as the favorite, the Dragons come in riding a three-game win streak.

For the winner of the meeting, it doesn’t get any easier, as it’ll have to face top-seeded South Warren.

Tyler’s Pick: Greenwood 11, Warren Central 3

  • Tuesday, May 22 – No. 1 South Warren (22-11, 10-2) vs. No. 4 Greenwood/No. 5 Warren Central – 5 p.m.

South Warren is, undoubtedly, the hottest team entering the District 14 Tournament.

The Spartans — winners of 15 of their last 18 — will meet the winner of Greenwood and Warren Central in the first semifinal matchup. South swept both the Gators and Dragons in the regular season and is very familiar with how to get past each of those two clubs, but it may not be easy.

Greenwood will most likely save its ace, Nate Cunningham, on Monday; therefore if the Gators beat Warren Central, he’ll be ready to go at it Tuesday against South Warren.

Tyler’s Pick: South Warren 3, Greenwood 2

  • Tuesday, May 22 – No. 2 Bowling Green (17-10, 9-3) vs. No. 3 Warren East (13-17, 6-6) – 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s semifinal nightcap featuring Bowling Green and Warren East is anticipated to be the best game of the entire tournament, mostly due to the projected pitching matchup between Jackson Haga and Ryan Hawks — two of District 14’s best.

When the two faced each other April 30, they both threw eight strikeouts apiece as the Purples escaped with a 7-6, eight-inning win to take Game 1 of the series. BG ended up sweeping the three-game slate against the Raiders and won Game 2 by a lopsided score of 21-0.

Bowling Green enters the District 14 Tournament having won 10 of its last 12, while Warren East went 3-7 in its final 10 regular-season games.

Tyler’s Pick: Bowling Green 5, Warren East 4

  • Wednesday, May 23 – Championship – 6 p.m.

As it’ll likely be No. 1 South Warren vs. No. 2 Bowling Green in the title match – as I have it, at least – it’ll be both sides’ first District 14 championship appearances since 2016 but the fourth time the two have met for the district title since 2012.

The Spartans took two of the three games against the Purples in their regular-season series.

Tyler’s Pick: South Warren 7, Bowling Green 5 – Both go to Region 4 Tournament at WKU
