South Warren QB Spurrier commits to Duke

Gavin Spurrier’s football career will be extending much further than high school.

Spurrier — South Warren’s standout senior quarterback — announced Saturday his commitment to Duke University and the Blue Devils’ football program.

The grandson of legendary Hall of Fame coach Steve Spurrier and son of current Washington State wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr., Spurrier has helped lead the Spartans to great heights during his two years with the program — especially in 2018.

Currently 14-0 on the season, South Warren went a perfect 10-0 in the regular season and next Saturday will play Covington Catholic for the Class 5A state championship at Kroger Field in Lexington.

A big reason for the Spartans’ success this year has been because of Spurrier, who has completed 174-of-246 (70.7 percent) passes for 2,491 yards and 39 touchdowns — with just three interceptions.

With Spurrier’s commitment to Duke, he is now the third current South Warren football player that has committed to play at the Division I level, joining Jacob Lacey (Notre Dame) and Clayton Bush (Western Kentucky).
